You hear a lot about such things as TCP/IP, domains, URLs, http, servers and other delightful jargon. It helps if you have a basic understanding of what these creatures are, so let’s jump right in and find out.

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol. It is a package of two communications standards, TCP and IP. These are sets of rules that computers on the Internet use to communicate with each other. If two computers were not using the same rules, they would not be able to talk or exchange data at all. TCP/IP is included with your operating system.

When you enter an address into your browser address bar such as http://www.pbs.org, the http part tells other computers on the Web that you want to communicate using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. This is another set of rules that usually runs on top of, or with, TCP/IP to bring you pretty Web sites and other information from the World Wide Web. Do not confuse this with html, or Hypertext Markup Language. This is the language used to create most Web sites.

That address I just mentioned is a URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. It consists of several parts. The www as you probably know, means World Wide Web. Today it is often unnecessary to type the http and the www in an address. The powerful computer, or server, which stores the site knows what you mean. We say the server is hosting the site, and will send a copy to anyone who asks for it.

PBS is the domain name. Another server on the Internet, called a Domain Name System (DNS) Server, will convert that domain into an Internet Protocol (IP) address, or string of numbers. This is the “real” address of the PBS site you are trying to reach. With the IP address in hand, your browser goes to get the site for you.

The .org part is called the top level domain. Perhaps the best known of these is the .com domain, for commercial Web sites. There are many others, such as .org (noncommercial), .gov (government), .edu (educational institutions), .net (network-oriented or general), etc. There is also another group of top level domains called country codes. These include .ca for Canada, .uk for United Kingdom, .au for Australia, etc. These domains are supposed to be used only by residents of the respective countries. But, as with the first type of domain above, the lines are blurred today, and you cannot depend on the top level domain to tell you much.

Following the basic address, we sometimes see a folder or file name. For example, http://www.pbs.org/teachers/ will take you to the page on the site where you will find material for teachers. We also sometimes see a long string of confusing characters. This is your browser sending specific information or a query to a site, such as when you sign in to your Web-based email account. If you just ask for pbs.org with no folder or file name, then the server will send you the default home page. This is a file on the site usually called index, with an extension such as .htm or .html. So when you request pbs.org, you really get something like http://www.pbs.org/index.html

With all the economic problems, bailouts, job losses and rising costs of living, more and more people are seeking ways to supplement their income, and of course, the Internet is the place they are all rushing to. Unfortunately though, many end up losing money and find themselves in more debt. This article is going to show you three major facts you need to know about making money online.

I am fortunate enough to have a really successful online business, but it wasn't always like that. For the first few years I spent a lot of my money trying out things in the hope I would succeed. When I discovered the 3 major facts about making money online, everything changed for me and my business finally started to make a profit, and today I am now making a great income full time and get to enjoy all the freedom that comes with working from home.

So, what are the 3 major facts about making money online?

1. You must find a mentor. Not having a mentor is like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel. You will never get it to go in the direction you want. The truth is, the fastest way to succeed in anything in life is to learn from someone who has already succeeded. I still see 90% of new people though who think they can do it all themselves without any help, until they get to a point where they run out of ideas and of course money.

Search out and find the right mentor for you in your business. If they are not willing to show, train and support you, then they are not a real mentor.

2. You must have focus. Focus is one of the most important things to succeed in life. Without focus you will not succeed at anything. This is a major problem for many people trying to make money online. The Internet is full of money making opportunities and too many people get distracted and think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Well, the simple truth is, it is not!

As Anthony Robbins once said, "One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular."

Imagine what the world would be like now if people like Alexander Graham Bell, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford didn't have focus. Without these people and their focus on their goals, we would not have telephones, computers, electricity or the automobile!

Staying focused on your business is vital and never forget that.

3. Taking action, not just action but MASSIVE action. Once again, I see too many people start their business and before they do anything, they spend too much time organizing themselves, getting their desk straight, writing down things to do etc etc. All of that stuff can be done later. If you start a business the most important thing is to get customers, buyers or members and you need to do is fast.

If you have a good mentor, they will tell you what you need to do first, and then just do it. Don't sit there waiting for products to arrive in the post. Use the enthusiasm you have at the beginning to your advantage and take massive action.

Whatever business you decide to do, recovering your outlay and costs as quick as you can is critical in your journey toward succeed. So, if you have your own business find out what you need to do and then just do it.

Providing you have the right mentor, keep your focus and take constant massive action, there is absolutely no reason why you should fail. In fact, I would go so far as to say it will be impossible for you to fail, providing you have the right mentor who has themselves achieved the type of success you want are searching for.
